  3. An italicized matchup means that it is Game 2 of a doubleheader, which for Pick'Em purposes will not be applicable (only Game 1 is counted, but Game 2 is still included above so that you can be aware that Game 1 will be 7 innings, and that pitching management may be different than a non-doubleheader game day).

  5. Estimated chance of winning percentages sourced from FiveThirtyEight’s 2020 MLB Game Predictions.
Our thoughts go out to all individuals affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, and we hope for full recoveries for the players and staff infected. We will try to include updates as information is made known; however, there is obviously a great deal of uncertainty, so details such as probable pitchers, winning odds, and match certainty are (even more than usual) subject to change. Note that cancelled games (weather or other reasons) are automatically counted as correct guesses, but not all games have been included as available selections (due to cancellations and late-rescheduling).

2020.09.08 17:42 CheatSheetProscom MLB (Main Slate) Breakdown - Tuesday, September 8th, 2020

MLB Stacks & Plays from CheatSheetPros!
QUICK NEWS AND NOTES:
MLB Blitz continues into this Labor Day week. I took my kids to school today for their 2 on and 3 off beginning so that was exciting and I’m on PTO all week to get ready for NFL and the Week 1 CheatSheet!
PITCHERS I AM LOOKING AT:
WALKER BUEHLER – Today I’m going to give you a high, mid and low cost pitcher to run lines around. There is a lot of variance for pitchers on the slate today but these are the 3 that are jumping out at me right now. Buehler has 21 and 35 DK points in his last two starts and I’m going to look for at least 3x upside out of a pitcher. Those two starts combined for 11.0 innings, 1 ER and 17 strikeouts. ARI is projected for 3.5 runs per vegas and our model has them at 3.6 runs. Walker Buehler has faced this projected lineup for a total of 93 team Abs and they are only hitting .215 off him with a 29% strikeout rate. ARI is cold right now ranking 25th in our L10 game power rankings, 30th in runs per game and 28th in wRC+, 30th in team batting average at (.195). Walker for the win!
ANDREW HEANEY – Heaney is my mid tier pitcher. He is coming off 2 fantastic starts putting up 29 and 36 DK points. Those combined for 14.2 innings, 1 ER and 16 strikeouts. If I can fit WalkeHeaney today that is where I’m going but for GPPs will drop down and use some Sixto if I can stack some stud hitters. Heaney has a great matchup vs. TEX who vegas is projecting at 3.8 runs and I’m projected at 3.6. They rank only 26th in our L10 power rankings, 29th in last 14 runs per game, 29th in OBP+ISO and 30th in wRC+ with a 23% team strikeout rate.
SIXTO SANCHEZ – Talk about consistent this guy has 18, 32 and 14 DK points in his 3 starts and he is only 6200. That is 3x, 5x and 2x value giving you a solid floor and a good punt. So far he has 19.0 innings, 5 ERs and a solid 19 strikeouts. Sixto has a touch matchup against the Braves who are running red hot right now and putting up almost 100 DK points per game as a team. They are 5th in our L10 game power rankings so use him with caution he is far from a lock but worth the risk in a GPP.
STACKS TO CONSIDER:
When stacking a team look on the cheat sheet for the cost per player for a stack and then compare out model with our projected team runs. If Vegas has a team projected at 4.9 runs and we have them at 6.7 that is a good team to consider. Also consider the bullpen rankings so you know what you are facing when the pitcher leaves the game. We rank all the bullpens so you can quickly see if you are facing the #1 bullpen or the #25 bullpen. Also consider team history vs. pitcher. We combine all the BVP data in our Daily Stacks tab and total it so you can see how many hits, strikeouts and home runs have been against a certain pitcher.
CHICAGO WHITE SOX vs. JOE MUSGROVE (19th Bullpen) – I want to start this stack off looking at Joe Musgrove. He is coming off 1 start after his return from the IL and he went 3.0 innings and gave up 2 ER with 4 Ks. That’s not terrible. His prior two starts he had 9.0 innings (combined) and gave up 8 ERs. Vegas has the CHW projected at 5.0 runs and our model has them at 5.2. Joe is holding down a 6.62 ERA with a 1.64 whip and allowing a .269 batting average. Last season he struggled slightly more vs. LHH so if you want a one off hitter you can look at Nomar Mazara (3000) who is 5 for 14 (.357) with 2 HR off Joe Musgrove and built around him.
SAD DIEGO PADRES vs. CHI CHI GONZALES – Chi Chi hasn’t been terrible this year and was decent last year but I have to stick with these Padres. They got shut down last night with a last minute pitching change. They still rank #1 in our L10 game power rankings, 5th in runs per game, 2nd in team batting average and 4th in wRC+ over the last 14 days. Chi Chi (that still sounds weird typing it out) has an ERA of 5.00 with a 1.56 whip and allowing a .294 batting average. His K9 rate is up from 6.6 last year to 9.0 this year but that is in limited innings.
COLORADO ROCKITES vs. MIKE CLEVINGER (16th Bullpen) – So this one is basically dirt cheap Dollar Store pricing for a stack against a struggling pitcher and a mid-tier bullpen. The top 5 man graded stack on our sheet is only 3720 per player! You have Story (5400), Arenado (5200) and Blackmon (5400) and then everyone else is 3500 or less. Clevinger last year had a nice 2.71 ERA and allowing a low .209 batting average. However, this year his xFIP is 4.85 and allowing a .265 batting average and that is which is slightly lower than average BABIP of .293. In his last two starts he has 12.0 innings, 4 ER and 8 strikeouts. Now in those 12 innings he did manage 15 hits so it’s not impossible for them to score 3-5 runs and a couple more on that bullpen.
Thanks for reading,
Haze

We will try to include updates as information is made known; however, there is obviously a great deal of uncertainty, so details such as probable pitchers, winning odds, and match certainty are (even more than usual) subject to change. Note that cancelled games (weather or other reasons) are automatically counted as correct guesses, but not all games have been included as available selections (due to cancellations and late-rescheduling).

2020.09.03 21:36 tyndall_blue A Story - The Padres and their "Unlucky" Calls

So for as well as our team has been doing, I couldn't help but notice the more than occasional instance of our batters/pitchers getting the short straw. Being a Padre fan we need something to complain about and that list is short these days, so I decided to look into it to see if I was imagining things or if the rest of the league was getting screwed as often as we were.

Let's start with our pitchers

So first things first, as a team how many strikes have been called balls? Ideally this is a low number. That number for us would be 103 pitches, which sounds high, but ranks only 9th highest in the MLB (1.9% of all padre pitches compared to the league wide 1.79%). Getting lightly screwed here.
Context though. Looking at pitcher specific stats for called balls in the zone we can see some of our riders of the struggle bus are not getting calls their way. That ball called a strike can make a huge difference depending on when in the PA it happened.
Next lets look at balls out of the zone called strikes as a team. Ideally this is high. That number is 149 (2.7%) which puts us at 18th lowest, middle of the pack on the list, but coming in at slightly below the league rate (2.75%). Individually we see Davies Getting slightly screwed here as well relative to the avg.
Diving a bit further into situation baseball, I feel like we've gotten especially screwed on 2 strike counts. So lets take a look there and see if that's just fan bias. Here is the list of team totals for pitches on a 2-strike count that were called balls. Taking a strikeout away from the pitcher. How about that, we're in first place by a large margin. And here is the list of individual pitchers. How about that, our struggling Sheriff has the second most amount of these instances in the entire MLB. And poor Tim Hill is fooling the umpire almost as often as the batters themselves.
Taking it even one step further, the balls called strikes on a full count, directly resulting in a runner on instead of an out, the Padre sit tied for 2nd in the MLB with 5 such instances (2 of which from Paddack).
TLDR - Moral of the story, the pitchers are not getting screwed at an obscene rate, however we're getting screwed in the wrong moments and Paddack/Hill specifically have not had good luck here

Now the batters

I was more interested in this from the start because I've noticed it more on the broadcast. So same deal. Let's look at strikes called balls as a team first. We'd like this to be high. We rank 17th in aggregate, but tied for 6th lowest rate in the MLB at 1.6% compared to the 1.79% league average. Thanks blue for being good at your job when it doesn't benefit us. Correctly calling balls at a well above average rate.
Balls called strikes? Completely different story. The aggregate number of those pitches as a team is 195 pitches or 3.4% of those pitches. Which sounds high....because it is high. That is 23 more pitches than the next team and a whopping 23% more than the league average 2.75% rate. Maybe it's because we're also the most patient team in the league as far as swing percentage outside of the zone....but yeah. Not a good look. Looking at the individual performances here, we can see the easy targets are Grish, Tatis, and Myers but really the whole team here is victim to some unlucky umpiring.
TLDR - Moral of the story the umpire turns into Hawk Eye for pitches thrown inside the zone, and goes completely cross eyed on anything not down the heart of the plate. We getting mega screwed at the plate this year relative to the league average.

Summary

Proof is in the numbers, all in all I think we're getting pretty unlucky relative to league average at this point. We can reasonably be mad at the umpires and you now have the data to back up your anger when someone calls you irrational.

[Beginning Update: Linguistics]
...
[Update Complete]
you feel a rush of knowledge fill your mind.
(You): "Se sent toujours bien en français."
(Prof. Flint): "Just a second in, and already a master of French."
(You): "no solo francés, padre."
(Prof. Flint): "I'm aware, Andy. You now are fluent in every language on Earth. With this combined knowledge I'm hoping you will be able to decipher alien languages also."
(You): "Fremdsprachen werden schwieriger sein."
(Prof. Flint): "I don't know German, Andy."
(You): "Oh, I said; alien languages will be harder."
(Prof. Flint): "I expect them to be extraordinarily complex, but you've excelled in everything you've done thus far. I have confidence in you."
an alarm starts ringing throughout the laboratory.
(Prof. Flint): "Finally! You're done being repaired, Andy."
father walks over to the repair pod in the corner, and flips three switches, then presses a red button, and finally pulls a large lever on the side. The repair pod hatch opens, steam flows out of the pod. Father reaches inside and unplugs some wires from Andy. Shortly after Andy wakes up and sits up from the pod.
(Andy): "So, I hear we'll be ready for lift off tomorrow?"
(Prof. Flint): "Yes, Andy. What else do you remember from these past two weeks?"
(Andy): "Everything, other than an empty spot right after the crash."
(You): "That's because I wasn't created until three days later."
(Prof. Flint): "So you know everything that Andy 2.0 knows, Andy?"
(Andy): "Sí, padre, después de todo compartimos una mente."
(Prof. Flint): "Excellent. Everything has worked as expected."
Yin walks in, leading Sera into the room.
(Yin): "Flint, I believe this is your friend you mentioned yesterday?"
(Prof. Flint): "Yes! Sera it's so good to see you!"
(Sera): "Likewise. So you really want to give me this laboratory?"
(Prof. Flint): "Yes. The only think I ask of you in return is to keep in contact with us and occasionally do a favor for us. Usually it will be just simply sending update files to Andy."
(Sera): "I'd be happy to help. Shall we take a tour then?"
(Prof. Flint): "Absolutely. I'll be back in a little while, Andy. You should spend some time thinking about if you're ready to launch tomorrow or not."
(You/Andy): "Yes, father." {in sync}
father leaves the laboratory to begin his tour with Sera.
(Yin): "So, boys. We going to leave tomorrow or what?"

  1. All columns are Away / Home. Records are current as-of the time of posting, and do not contain the current day’s matchup results.
  2. A bolded matchup means that there is a chance of Precipitation greater than 35% in a non-domed stadium at the time of this post.
  4. Probable pitchers, stats, and weather data sourced from mlb.com (via the MLB-StatsAPI and Swish Analytics).
